Clean Water for Lobitos, Peru

by Becky Mendoza November 26, 2019

Lobitos, Peru is unlike anywhere we've ever been, for many reasons, the biggest being: THERE IS NO WATER.

Nestled into an isolated bone-dry dusty stretch of Northern Peru's coastline, Lobitos is an artisanal fishing village pioneered by British oil companies and was a thriving community with a desalination plant which produced its water. In the 1960's, the Peruvian military took over the town, expelling the foreign enterprises and destroying the infrastructure, including the desalination plant, which meant: no more water.
Today, left parched in the desert, water gets pumped into the town weekly, and sometimes, not at all. That water that does come is limited and contaminated, leaving residents and visitors vulnerable to bacteria and parasites.
In September 2019, the Changing Tides Foundation team traveled to Lobitos to work with Beyond the Surface International on the Women and Water program in order to support and strengthen female participation and leadership capabilities to take charge of improving the water situation.
While in Lobitos, we presented the opportunity to implement a solar-powered reverse-osmosis desalination machine which is capable of producing 2,800 gallons of clean drinking water per day over the next 10 years. The community was thrilled about the idea and agreed that the distribution would be best managed by the women.
We need your help! To purchase this machine, materials and cover construction, we need to reach our goal of $55,000. For only $25, you can provide clean drinking water for one resident of Lobitos for the next 10 years!
