LAYBACK WEEKEND RECAP

by Becky Mendoza January 15, 2018

We're back from the first-ever Layback Weekend at Mt. Baker in Washington and the stoke levels are still so high! We hosted a massive Plastic Swear Jar in the main tent to raise awareness about our single-use plastic waste. We had no trouble filling a huge bin with plastics from the event and from everyone collecting their plastic waste which included things like water bottles, plastic wrappers, chip bags, etc...In addition, the raffle and silent art auction raised $6,000.00 which was split evenly between Changing Tides Foundation, B4BC and the Coal Pad Skate Park in Glacier.

When we got the call from legendary snowboarders Robin Van Gyn, Hana Beaman and Barrett Christy back in October asking if CTF would participate and be a beneficiary in the first-ever event of it's kind, we jumped at the opportunity.

The Layback Weekend is a ladies campout weekend which brought over 150 participants from all over the world and featured a welcome-party at Mt. Baker Snowboards, a Vans-sponsored mini skate ramp featuring a demo and skate lesson from Skate Like A Girl, a mountain safety clinic, a killer apres event and silent auction, the layback snowboard contest and a restorative yoga session to close the weekend.  And so we flocked in from all over the world. Leah came over from Oregon, Leane from Denver, Anna from San Diego and Becky from Encinitas. We were also joined by some of our sea-sisters from Oregon and Hawaii, Macy Melsa and Lauren, as well as CTF Ambassador, pro-snowboarder Helen Schettini who drove the RV down from Whistler.

This was our first time together in the cold weather so snuggling up in an RV in the Mt. Baker parking lot was the perfect way to keep us warm. The rains, white-out conditions and fierce winds didn't bother us at all, it was incredible to connect with so many amazing women and to see how the snow and mountains can be equally as empowering as the sea.
