The WOMP Bocas Fundraiser helped Changing Tides Foundation, Give and Surf and Beyond the Surface International raise some funds for their collaboration in creating and implementing the Women’s Outreach Mentorship Program (WOMP) in Bocas del Toro, Panama which will provide at-risk teenage girls in the community, the opportunity to learn to swim, SUP, snorkel and eventually surf. The program will be run by the staff at the Give and Surf headquarters in Bocas del Toro, Panama.
The event took place at the beautiful new Union Cowork space in the heart of Encinitas on the evening of March 23, 2017 and brought over 150 guests together from near and far. Vibes were high and the prize packs were stacked. With a $20 donation, guests were able to enjoy live music from Todo Mundo Band, amazing tacos and poke bowls from north county favorite, Fish 101 Restaurant, beer from Duckfoot Brewing Company, wine from Ziobaffa and other refreshments from Guayaki, Amy & Brian Coconut Water, Clif Bar and more. The donation also included a photo booth by DL Photos and 1 raffle ticket. The raffle was the centerpiece of this occasion. With over 30 raffle prize packs to choose from all valued at between $200-$500, attendees were pleased to purchase additional tickets at $5 each, 5 for $20 or an arms-length for $100. Leucadia local and surf industry veteran, Justin Cote, MC-ed the evening which included a live auction for a Yorepa Yoga Retreat in Panama and a Becker Surfboard package. Needless to say, with over 30 winners, stoke levels were high!
Keeping in line with Changing Tides Foundation’s eco-minded missions and staying away from single-use plastics, the event was a Bring Your Own Cup (BYOC) affair. Most guests brought their own and those who didn’t had the option to purchase a stainless steel Changing Tides Foundation mug for only $5.00.
“We are completely humbled by the outpouring of support we received from our local community and the action sports community as a whole and we are honored to be among such a supportive group. We would like to thank every single person and business that donated product to our cause, as well as every person who attended, volunteered or contributed in any way. You are the reason we are able to do this work, we are just vehicles” said Becky Mendoza of Changing Tides Foundation and Action Sports Law Group.
This June, the Changing Tides Foundation team along with Beyond the Surface International will visit Give and Surf in Bocas del Toro for a women's empowerment clinic in order to address gender inequality issues, encourage participation and support, implement clean water filtration systems and document the progress of the WOMP program.
