Sri Lanka, formerly known as Ceylon, located just south east of India and north east of the Maldives, is a small island nation known as “the pearl of the indian Ocean.” It is a country of inspiring beauty, culture, tradition.
After the 26 year civil war and the devastating Boxing Day tsunami in 2004, from which the country gained the most international attention, the country is now stabilized and re-building. The result of the tumultuous history is that this tropical paradise has been largely overlooked by travelers and it has become an off the beaten path destination waiting to be discovered.
However, in a developing country of over 20 million people, Sri Lanka faces many challenges. Many people lack access to clean water, sanitation, and education. As foreigners start to permeate the island and enjoy all of the riches it has to offer, there is much opportunity for travelers to give back to this tiny island community. The Buddhist and Hindu people are incredibly kind and will welcome you with open arms to this remarkable place. We are currently building a project in Sri Lanka and will have more information on this project in the coming days! You can donate to our Sri Lanka project here.
