More Waves Less Plastic: Summer Adventure Guide

Happy Plastic Free July! As the days get longer and the nights get shorter, we can’t help but seek out adventures both near and far. Adventuring is a critical part of enjoying summer, but can have an unintended consequence that often goes overlooked; namely, single-use plastic waste. In order to mitigate our consumption, we created this guide for you to travel and enjoy summer responsibly, so you can have More Waves and Less Plastic!

1. Leus Towels

What do towels have to do with plastic pollution? More often than we think, textiles are made with synthetic polyester, a plastic byproduct that is used once and ultimately ends up in our oceans and landfills. LEUS has expertly engineered towels made from recycled post-consumer polyester and certified organic, sustainably-sourced cotton to combat this issue. They even avoid shipping in plastic altogether by using 100% compostable mailers. Their 360 ECO initiative has thought of everything, from the materials their towels are made of, to the carbon footprint of their shipping and product, to their social impact by partnering with us and donating 1% for the planet. Not to mention, their towels come in eye-catching designs. So far Leus has eliminated 150,000 lbs of plastic from our oceans. 2. Jolyn Swimsuits

Similar to how towels are often made with and packed in virgin single-use plastics, so too are bathing suits. JOLYN is making moves to combat this this by making suits from recycled water bottles and fishing nets - giving discarded plastic a new home! It’s important to note that NONE of their fabrics contain PFAS, BPA, or any other dangerous chemicals. JOLYN’s packaging also upholds the same standards, with 100% compostable outer packaging and recycled inner packaging. And when it comes to impact, JOLYN seeks out partnerships with organizations like us and Surfrider to truly make a difference. JOLYN is a tier 1 sponsor of Changing Tides Foundation’s WOMP program, and we are ever grateful for their support in making women’s mentorship through surfing and environmental education accessible to so many (plus we get to look good in Jolyn Suits while doing it!). 3. Avasol Sunscreen

You might feel lost in the woods when looking for a sunscreen that’s NOT packaged in plastic. But fret not - we’ve got the perfect plastic-free, 100% biobased sunscreen option for you and your entire family: Avasol. We’ve been using and recommending Avasol since the start, because they’re a win-win for us and the environment. Their Surfer’s Barrier Sticks were the OG paperboard sunscreen tubes back in the day 12 years ago, and they continue to pioneer healthy solutions to personal care while making a larger social impact by partnering with orgs like ours! 4. Mizu Products

Straying away from plastic water bottles and plastic utensils are no brainers, but it's easier said than done to find ones that truly work. That’s why we love Mizu. Their products have always performed and stood the test of time for us, seeing as they are designed by a group of travel hungry adrenaline junkies that share a deep passion for outdoor adventures. The simple act of using a Mizu product over its single-use counterpart is already helping to reduce pollution, but they didn’t stop there - Mizu donates 1% for the planet to CTF! Learn more about their sustainability here, and get your reusables for summer HERE.

5. Stasher Bags

When packing snacks for a trip, it’s easy to be a creature of habit and pack them in plastic. With the advent of Stasher bags, it's time to redefine our habits. Stasher Bags are a healthier alternative to plastic bags without sacrificing functionality. If anything, they are more functional - they’re endlessly reusable, versatile, and even microwaveable! The leak-free pinch seal makes them great for packing anything inside without worry, and when you’re ready to clean them, they can simply be thrown in the dishwasher! One Stasher bag alone keeps 260 plastic bags out of the ocean each year. Imagine if we all switched to Stashers! So far, Stasher has saved 5.5 billion single-use plastic bags from entering the ocean.
